BECOME AN OZTAG REFEREE
There are many great benefits to becoming a Oztag referee whether you still play the game, have retired, or have never played there is plenty to be gained from picking up the whistle. Refereeing Oztag is a great way to stay involved in the game as well as having some fun, making new friends and earn some money along the way.
Referee development is an extremely important part of our game, simply without referees we wouldn’t have a game to enjoy. If you would like to get involved with the fastest growing recreational sport in ACT follow the steps listed below to become an accredited Oztag referee. There are many levels a referee can reach within the sport of Oztag, starting at a grass roots level and advancing to a national and even international level.
NEW REFEREES
For persons aged 13 and above.
Follow these few simple steps and you will be on your way to becoming a Oztag Referee:
1. Complete Oztag’s Level 0 Accreditation
2. Register to attend the ACT Oztag Referee Course
3. Complete the Referee Contact Information Form
4. Attend the ACT Oztag Referee Course
5. Start Refereeing! You will be a “shadow” referee to gain confidence and skill, before refereeing on your own.
NEW SENIOR REFEREES – You must be at least 15 years of age, and complete a Senior Referee Course, such as a Level 1 Course. Once you have completed the course, you will be able to referee social grade competitions.

3. Attend the ACT Oztag Referee Course

accreditation PROGRAMS
Level 0 Beginner – Program (For NEW Referees)
- Pass Level 0 written exam
- Achieved referee experience criteria – A “common sense” approach needs to be taken. If the referee is not comfortable to referee a shared game or convener believes they aren’t ready to take the field yet, then more off field mentoring & running touch lines may be needed.
- Assessed by local senior referee
- Complete a “Referee Contact Information Form”
- Officiate 15 games as a stand-alone referee
- Referees will remain a Level 0 until successful completion of Level 1 written exam and
- $15 per game pay rate once qualified
Level 1 – Written Program (For returning referees)
- Maintain interest & displays enthusiasm while refereeing
- Display the ability to referee Lower grades
- Pass Level 1 written exam referee
- Referee at least 35 games before practical assessment.
- Pass AO’s practical assessment Level 1 at domestic competition
- Display the ability to referee lower/younger grades and maintain full control of the game on their own.
- $20 per game pay rate once qualified
Level 2 – Written Program – Contact ACT Oztag
- Maintain interest & displays enthusiasm while refereeing
- Achieved Level 1 assessment.
- Refereed 2 seasons at domestic level.
- Pass Level 2 written exam
- Display the ability to referee higher grades and maintain full control of the game on their own
- $20 per game pay rate for U4’s – U15’s
- $25 per game pay rate for U16 – Senior’s
- $30 per game pay rate for A Grade – Senior games
